娘のサム（エマ・ストーン）はリーガンとは対照的である。薬物中毒のリハビリのため、サムはトイレットペーパーに線を書いて時間を紛らわしている。線一本が1000年ごとの地球の時間を表す、数区画で人類の歴史の年月に達する。見た目では取るに足らない量だということ：つまり、私たちがいた時間の全て、私たちがしてきたことの全てはトイレットペーパー一枚で流れる線のごくわずかに過ぎない。
